I have spent the weekend trying to keep my head above the water in terms of lesson planning and grad school after our trip, so I have not yet posted here about my new story or the lovely story that Elleth wrote for me! D^: This year, I decided to participate in MPTT's Yule Fic Exchange. In the past, because I'm usually taking two classes, I could never manage.

Elleth wrote the story that I received. I love Elleth's work, so I knew I would enjoy this as well, and I was not wrong! I am going to be lazy and copy over the rec I wrote on Tumblr:

Elleth wrote this story for me as part of Many Paths to Tread’s Yule Fic Exchange. It’s a beautiful story, and I hope more people will read it and leave her lots of love in the form of comments and kudos! :)

My request was for a story about friendship between at least two women of the House of Finwë. The story begins after the Darkening of Valinor (one of my favorite time periods to write/think about) with Nerdanel (one of my favorite characters! :) seeking a form of redemption for her family’s deeds by working on the defenses of the Calcirya. In the midst of her labors, she receives a letter from a most unexpected person …

Elleth’s stories are, imho, consistently some of the most gracefully written in the Silmarllion fandom. This one is no exception and deftly includes magical elements that make Elleth’s descriptions feel otherworldly—Tolkien might say “elvish.” Elleth also nails the voice of Nerdanel’s correspondent perfectly (I want to keep it a surprise who it is!). This is a character I’ve not written in any significant sense, in part because she intimidates the hell out of me. But her voice in this story is like Elleth crawled into my head and made my vision of her real.

This is a lovely and thought-provoking story, and I hope you’ll take a look! It is on SWG, AO3, MPTT, and LiveJournal.

My story was written for Wheelrider to fulfill the request for "A story that passes the Bechdel test! Meaning it features at least two women who talk to each other about something other than a man. Any characters, any time period, any Tolkien source are fine." Here is the summary of "Daytracer":

After the Darkening of Valinor, the Aulendur struggle to find a way to bear aloft the final fruit and flower of the Two Trees. Nerdanel finds a unexpected ally in Arien, who helps her discover the secret knowledge that will return the world to light.

"Daytracer" is on SWG, AO3, MPTT, and LiveJournal.

I have written the following ficlets for Summer Solstice. There are no particular warnings, and everything should be safe for general audiences. They are also posted at SWG and Many Paths to Tread. As always, comments--both positive and critical--are welcome at all places!

Summary: Aegnor sees Andreth for the first time on the Summer Solstice. A double drabble.

The Swift Flame )

Summary: Maedhros prepares for the Fifth Battle. A double drabble.

White Nights )

Summary: Nerdanel remembers joy. A drabble.

The Turning )

This story was written for Elleth, who asked for "Feanor and Nerdanel meet again during the end of the world ... [and] seeing something more action-packed would be nice."

It is probably indicative of the sort of writer that I am that I was more worried about the second part than the first!

The request is pretty indicative of the summary: After ages of estrangement during which Nerdanel has finally found peace, she is summoned to Tirion to meet the request of one she never thought she'd see again.

There is some very mild sexuality and violence in this story, but nothing that shouldn't make it suitable for most audiences.

Rekindling )

The attempt to back up all of my daily drabbles on my LJ continues. I know that these are not new for most of my flist; for those who might read them for the first time, I hope you enjoy!

My daily-drabble project is on SWG here. It's updated daily ... more or less. ;)

On the way to Alqualondë, Fëanor thinks on the Silmarils. It has always been my private theory that part of Fëanor's obsessive pursuit came with the association of the theft of the Silmarils with Finwë's murder, almost as though to resolve the first would also resolve the second. This drabble explores this idea.

Longing for Light )

Today is Friday the 13th, and today's word deals with a phobia more irrational than most (and phobias are inherently irrational). So today's tribble--exactly 300 words--deals with what appears at first glance to be borne of paranoia and irrationality, a misgiving that leads to the creation of the Silmarils. This idea is expressed in The Silmarillion:

In that time were made those things that afterwards were most renowned of all the works of the Elves. For Fëanor, being come to his full might, was filled with a new thought, or it may be that some shadow of foreknowledge came to him of the doom that drew near; and he pondered how the light of the Trees, the glory of the Blessed Realm, might be preserved imperishable.
Irrational )

Fëanor, it seems, has taken over the daily drabble. Today's tribble again features him, but when the Word of the Day means "fruitful and productive," then who else but Fëanor comes to mind?

I've always believed that Fëanor was a difficult, demanding father but nonetheless adoring of his children. In fact, I spent an entire novel developing this idea. Today's piece looks at the same in the more reasonable length of 300 hundred words.

But a Stone )

Today's word is a funny one, so I've made an attempt at a humor piece. Celegorm cleans his room, in 200 words.

Housecleaning )

Today's tribble (300 words) is dual-purposed. For one, it is inspired by the Word of the Day, bibelot. For another, it is dedicated with fondest wishes to Cheryl, who asked for a birthday drabble called "Wet Elves." Well, it's only one wet Elf and I've chosen a different title, but I hope that it suffices. Happy birthday, my dear!

Eärwen watches her soon-to-be husband construct a special gift for her on the beach of Alqualondë.

Love in Pearls (a.k.a. Wet Elves) )

The Small and Secret Things is my daily-drabble project on SWG. Because I really should have these things saved somewhere other than SWG (as, indeed, I preach to SWG members about their own work), then I am putting them up here as well. Hopefully, every few days, I'll be able to catch up and post a few more.

Nerdanel remembers life before the Darkening and her estrangement from Fëanor. This is a weird tribble (300 words) with some darker themes but nothing graphic. It was inspired by Noliel's much brighter Swinging in the Rain for Seven in '07.

There Was Long Ago a Tree )

Maedhros on acclimating to Himring after life in Tirion.

Difficult )

Finwë considers Míriel's sacrifice for Fëanor. This loss--a husband's loss of his wife on an occasion supposed to be joyous--has always been to me one of the most tragic tales of The Silmarillion. My stories never quite do it justice … but I keep coming back to it nonetheless.

Exchanged Aborning )

Maedhros gives Rochallor to Fingolfin. This particular detail is not canon, but Maedhros did gift horses to the people of Fingolfin:

Of those horses many of the sires came from Valinor, and they were given to Fingolfin by Maedhros in atonement of his losses, for they had been carried by ship to Losgar.
-"Of Beleriand and Its Realms"

This piece consists of six hundred-word drabbles.

The Gift Horse )

Turgon contemplates the building of Gondolin. I have tried for an archaic, slightly overwrought style in this one because, well, today's word is archaic! It seemed fitting. Since I will soon be writing Turgon, it seemed the perfect opportunity to test his voice, which, in my mind is (you guessed it) archaic and slightly overwrought.

This piece is a quadrabble: exactly 400 words.

A City in Light )

And that's that for tonight. I'm tired and I'm sure my flist is quite full of Spam™ done drabble-style. :)

Yes, I do still write stories! And Silmfic stories too. :)

"Statues" is about how Nerdanel coped with the loss of her husband and children through her art ... and how she may have helped the Teleri to do the same. I've kept it safe for all audiences, though there are some small mentions of violence at the Kinslaying at Alqualonde.

Happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] tarion_anarore, [livejournal.com profile] noliel, and [livejournal.com profile] allie_meril! ([livejournal.com profile] trekqueen, aside from Glorfindel, I'm really not sure who your favorite characters are ... if you're not a Nerdanel fan, let me know, and I'll try to come up with something for you! :) So many March birthdays!

As usual, all comments--positive and critical--are welcome. Or just read and enjoy!

Statues )
Because I've been so busy, I haven't been able to post my gift drabbles on time, even though in some cases their written and waiting. There just aren't enough hours in the day. But here are the past two days' worth as well as today's.

[livejournal.com profile] oloriel asked for Feanorians and also admitted to a recent fascination with Maedhros’s captivity in Angband. For me, this is an ongoing fascination, so I took this idea and ran with it. Though it might seem a bit odd of an addition to a collection of stories to be given as gifts for the holidays, I have written about the captivity of Maedhros from the strange perspective of Caranthir.

In my storyverse, Caranthir is able to sense the spirits and thoughts of others. I use this idea in “The Space between Hearts.”

The idea of using a black bar to represent a word was originally done (to the best of my knowledge) in a short story by Joyce Carol Oates.

This story is dark and disturbing and contains violent images. Sensitive and squeamish readers should tread with care.

The Space between Hearts )

For [livejournal.com profile] allie_meril is a quadrabble—exactly four hundred words—about Nerdanel. In this quadrabble, she gives her father the surprising news that she has gone away and married a high prince without first seeking his permission.

Eru's Blessing )

A long while ago, [livejournal.com profile] appoggiato won the Spot the Bad Pun contest that I’d had for a chapter in AMC. Her prize was a story of her choice, and she asked for a story about Maglor during the happier times of the Fëanorian family. I’ve still yet to write the story, but I offer four drabbles in the meantime about Maglor during one of the happier times of his childhood. (And I will one day actually finish the full story!)

From the Doors of Night )
To kick off this posting:

Happy Birthday, [livejournal.com profile] allie_meril!!!

Best wishes for a happy day today (despite all the classes and the lab) and many, many more to come!

For Allie's birthday, of course, I have written a story. Well, it's not a traditional story; it is actually a series of eight drubbles. Allie asked on the HASA Birthday Cards Forum for stories having to do with students, and I know that she likes Nerdanel, and so these eight drubbles follow Nerdanel's life and the lessons she's learned.

Because it's Feanor/Nerdanel at parts and I'm a hopeless perv for them, this story teeters precariously on the line between a general and an adult rating. To use American movie ratings, it's a healthy PG-13. There is nudity and some sexuality but nothing graphic.

Enjoy your day, Allie, and many hugs!

Forgotten Lore )
Allie asked for a story about how Nerdanel came to leave Fëanaro, preferrably from the points of view of both characters. You are right, Allie, in that this scene and all of the smaller conflicts briefly touched upon in this tale will one day be part of the epic on which I am working, but this was a great chance to explore this moment now, and I hope you enjoy.

This story is rated for adults only for reasons of some sexuality. Nothing too graphic, but I'm playing it safe.

Estranged )
[livejournal.com profile] arandil13 asked for angry, angsty Fëanor and Nerdanel, some time after their estrangement, meeting again, preferrably with a non-marital-bickering argument. Well, I don't know how well I did on the last part, as I've learned that my characters don't like being told how to talk to each other. Damn characters. But they do disagree quite a bit and it becomes suitably passionate.

I'm keeping this story with a general rating, although (surprise surprise!) there is some sexuality in it. Doh. It's Nerdanel and Fëanor. They had seven kids. It's as close to canon as you can get, and I just can't help myself.

One Last Wish )
Happy Birthday, [livejournal.com profile] arandil13!

I would sing to you, but you don't want to hear the off-key warbling that I call "singing." No Maglor, am I ;) So I have written you a story instead.

I had in mind a bit of forge-smut. After all, nothing says "Happy Birthday" like forge-smut, at least to a Fëanatic. So I got my Fëanor imaginary friend muse and my Nerdanel imaginary friend muse and put them in the forge together and....

Nothing.

It's kind of like mating great pandas, apparently. You can put them together with all the right moods but that doesn't mean that they're going to do anything. They kind of giggled together. Fëanor made some pretty bracelets, all of which he gave to Nerdanel (much to my dismay, as it was my birthday too, and the bastard owes me), but no forge-smut. Damn.

So I changed the environment a bit and got...something. It seems my imaginary friends muses don't like mindless stuff, even if it's smut. They want to do everything with a purpose. Pretentious gits.

But there are naughty bits in it. So if you are underaged (I am obviously not talking to Arandil here but to others who might stumble upon this) or bothered by this sort of thing, please stop reading now.

The idea of Fëanor's relationship with the Valar as compared to Nerdanel's and the marital conflicts it must have caused has always fascinated me. I deal with it a lot (later) in AMC. Well, it seems they were determined to deal with it here too.

As always, comments and suggestions are welcome. This is very rough, as a week ago, it was not even written yet. Such is the nature of birthday stories. Happy reading!

Blasphemy )
I wrote this story as a birthday gift for my friend Jenni. Happy birthday, Jenni!

This story is cross-posted to the [livejournal.com profile] house_of_feanor and [livejournal.com profile] silwritersguild communities. I realized just the other day that I had posted it here and not in my own journal! Shame! (Hence the fact that it is a backdated entry.)

Please be aware that this story is sexually explicit and for adults only. If you are underaged or bothered by sexuality in literature, please turn away now.

As always, I love comments--both good and bad--especially as I have not had much time to live with and revise this story. Enjoy! :)

The Imperfect Gift )
