Eru, you phrase this in a way that raises a lot of anger in me, knowing that so many real people, in real life think this way.
I had told you a while back I know that I had been contemplating a slash story that was more about the societal implications of such a lifestyle (in a homophobic or at least predominantly straight world) than about hott m/m sex. This interests me a lot more than writing hott m/m action. Maybe I'm weird. ;) But when you gave me this bunny, it came to mind to make this story the one that I'd been thinking of. The way I see it, I would otherwise probably put off writing said slash story forever. And I really wanted to write a story that dealt with this issue. I haven't seen many that do; perhaps some of tehta's work.
It's an important issue for me, not just because of my sister (though she is credited with more or less taking my head, turning it in the right direction, and saying, "This is important, Dawn!") But strictly from the standpoint of my believing strongly in justice and equal rights for all regardless of the morality du jour. So this has become one of my favorite--and perhaps most important--story to me. I know that it's probably wishful thinking that it will change minds, but one never knows. I have to try. :)
It is also a different approach you have taken, not taking Elven homosexuality as a given, as part of their nature (as most slash writers, myself included, do.)
Interestingly, that's my perspective in The Midhavens: Elves are naturally bisexual because their immortality makes it so that procreation is not such a pressing issue. They enjoy love and sex for the pleasure and companionship it provides, regardless of who their partner is. And I like to read those stories and enjoy the notion of such a world. I hope for such a world. But at the same time, as an author, I am too tempted to write the challenges that so many face today simply because of whom they love, so I had to put this story in that particular verse. :)
I loved the way you brought in Ornisso, warming us up to him gradually. First, he appears bland and then he just blossoms, as Erestor's feelings for him grow.
I'm starting to really have fun with background characters. Ornisso was a lot of fun to write. I believe that he is quite thoroughly f***ed up, so one has to feel sorry for him even as he is cruel and deplorable at the same time. As Telvo says later, he needs so much love that one person will never be enough for him, and so he shall have no love at all.
Ornisso (like Vorondil in AMC) would be a cool character to star in his own story. Sadly, though, I feel that OC-based fanfic would be a waste; it can't be published and it won't be widely read. Though I could take the Tolkien out and make it an original fic. Hmmmm....
Somehow, the fact that Erestor burned his unsent letters made me think of Feanaro's fiery spirit and the supernatural possibility that he knew who Erestor was and what he needed long before any word was said or written.
That is such a cool idea! (And, needless to say, one that I had not considered until reading your comment....)
Thanks as always, Alina, for such a wonderful comment. *big hugs to you from me, Erestor, and Feanor*
