I suppose it's much the same as how people have committed atrocities against others--and continue to do so--by not wanting to see humanity in those different from them.
It's so true. In everything from racism to religious persecution to sexism, it's always been about justifying your actions because the people you're treating badly are "less human" than you. People can be blinder than a sack of piglets and just as squealy. :-(
