[personal profile] jenni_blog asked: "Did you watch the premier of A Handmaid's Tale and what did you think about it?"

Indeed I have! I have watched through Episode 4. I'll put my thoughts below the cut because I'm going to make no attempt to resist spoilers.

Thoughts on 'A Handmaid's Tale' [SPOILERS] )
Last week, Bobby and I watched the HBO series True Detective. I will start by saying that we were hooked by episode 1 (it usually takes me four or five to settle into a new show) and both really enjoyed the series. I highly recommend it; it was character-driven with a tightly focused, edge-of-your-seat plot. I avoided looking at articles or commentary on the show before watching it, not because I didn't want to be spoiled on plot but because I knew the show was causing a stir, and I didn't want my own opinion or interpretation of it to be biased.

Most of the headlines I have seen discussing the show focus on its treatment of women. Since that is an issue I care about myself (being a woman and a feminist), then that is what I concentrated on as I watched the show and where my thoughts will go now. The rest goes beneath the cut because there will be spoilers and also (trigger warning!) discussion of extreme violence against women and children.

Cut for spoilers and discussion of extreme violence against women and children )
From Oshun. I am pretty much the exact opposite of a TV watcher. I cannot remember the last time I watched something on TV that wasn't football or an episode of a show on HBO GO. But I did grow up in a TV-watching family. The nightly routine was dinner at 6 so as not to miss Wheel of Fortune at 7. My parents watched Jeopardy at 7:30, but they didn't like it; it was just something to look at until the sitcoms started at 8. As I got older, there were some dramas in there, and always the Sunday night movie. (I didn't watch all of it because I was a kid with homework and my own interests, but I did absorb some of it over the years!) When we got cable--a huge deal!--Nickelodeon was sold rather hard to my sister and me by my parents, and when we grew older, we supplanted Nick with MTV and VH1.

Ironically, none of the three current shows that I do watch (albeit on HBO GO since they start an hour too early for my evening schedule) are not on the original list, so I will add them.

- Bold all of the following TV shows of which you've seen 3 or more episodes.
- Italicize a show if you're positive you've seen every episode.
- Asterisk * if you have at least one full season on tape or DVD
- If you want, add up to 3 additional shows (keep the list in alphabetical order).
