The Icon M-Word-Thing! Nabbed from Oshun!

I got this m-word-thing from [personal profile] heartofoshun. Here's how to play:

1. Reply to this post with "UNICORNS", and I will pick five of your icons.
2. Make a post (including the meme info) and talk about the icons I chose.
3. Other people can then comment to you and make their own posts.
4. This will create a never-ending cycle of icon glee.

Hermione icon

I wanted a Hermione icon for literally years. No, it shouldn't be an ordeal to find an icon of one of the major characters in one of the most popular works of modern YA fiction, but we all know what my life has been like these past few years. I just didn't have time to look. Finally, I found this one by [profile] iconsbywong and adopted it.

I enjoy the Harry Potter books and movies, but I'm hardly part of the fandom, so why Hermione? Bobby took to calling me Hermione when I started back to school because I become hyperventilatingly batshit nuts about my schoolwork. Seriously, one of the few major arguments Bobby and I have ever had concerned an educational psychology textbook that wasn't ordered on time. I was getting the stinkeye from him this afternoon because I confessed that I hadn't decided yet if I was taking the textbook I'm currently reading for my next class (which doesn't start till October) with me to the beach. I've already decided on my term paper topic for the class. I'm nuts. I admit that.

An icon with Hermione was one of the few I felt I truly needed for those posts when I handwring about school.

Maedhros and Fingon friends icon

This icon was created by the incomparable [profile] ladyelleth, on her icon journal [community profile] september_icons, using artwork done by the amazing Kasiopea. (The grandiose adjectives are very much deserved, as I am talking about one of my favorite digital artists and one of my favorite traditional artists in the fandom!) This is one of my favorite icons, and I use it a lot when replying to comments. Why is it a favorite? It's hard to articulate. Maedhros and Fingon have so much and so profound of significance to many people in the Silm community. Although I don't write them as a pairing often, I'm no exception in seeing meaning in their friendship. The whole Thangorodrim story was probably the only thing that stood out from my first muddled reading of The Silmarillion; Maedhros was instantly a favorite character of mine and still is.

accordion icon

Okay, I'm really thrilled that Oshun picked this one! I made this icon myself, and I think I did a pretty good job on it, considering my feeble skills with web graphics. This one is inspired by a slogan used on Northern Sun merchandise. I changed the wording to the imperative, which I think sounds better than their version. (Sorry, Northern Sun!)

During a team spirit training session at school recently, we had to make a personal mandala with only visual images, with the exception of our personal credo at the bottom. I chose this as my personal credo. It's always been very important to me not to get swept up by social influence but to try to step outside of that and ask why we think or do what we do. I try not to be contrary just to be contrary (really ... I suspect anyone who knows me very well in RL is rolling their eyes right now!) but do try very hard to always act in accordance with my values, even when that means marching out of step with everyone around me.

Out of the Storm icon

Another beautiful icon by [profile] ladyelleth, on [community profile] september_icons, using artwork by another fabulous and favorite artist of mine, [personal profile] oloriel. I use this one a lot too. I call myself a pie-eyed optimist for a reason, and this icon conveys hope in the midst of strife. From a fannish perspective, of course, it draws on the meaning and symbolism of EƤrendil and the Silmaril. When I see this icon, I see Maedhros and Maglor, momentarily pausing from their pursuit of the Silmarils, looking heavenward and appreciating the beauty of their father's creation in a new way.

skate icon

This was one of the first icons I made for myself. Bad me, I didn't find and credit the artist. :( I chose it because I have been freestyle rollerskating--taking lessons and performing in shows--since I was 11 years old. (I haven't in recent years because ... *shifty look at Life[tm]*) I used to write about skating a lot, so this was my icon for skating posts. The daughter of my skating teacher recently put together a book to commemorate how long her mom has been teaching, and I wrote a letter to include in it. My skating teacher had such a positive impact on my life at a time when I really needed someone to care about and appreciate me. I've talked before on here about how my self-esteem was shredded as a kid by bullying by peers and, I'm sorry to say, a teacher that I had throughout elementary school. I started skating right as I began in middle school, and it allowed me to see myself differently, and my skating teacher helped to erase a lot of the misconceptions I had of myself as awkward, ugly, and worthy only of criticism. Skating gave me a lot of confidence and is something I simply love to do. A pair of skates and an open floor gives me a feeling of freedom like no other. Since music will always translate into motion for me, it's another form of artistic expression.

Okay, I have to ask... can you actually play on an accordeon? Ever since I saw that icon I have been - probably strangely enough - wondering if you could actually do that!

It's amazing how big an impact (good or bad) one person can have on another. Your skating teacher sounds like a really wonderful woman.

(Also, your accordion icon is one of my favorites. :D)
