The Daily Drabble

Bad 'gund forgot her daily drabble for *counts* four days. Yep. Bad 'gund.

So since dictionary.com decided to be nice and send me the word nice and early, I'm getting it done early so that I don't forget or get to the point where there is simply no five-minute break available to write a drabble.

Funny thing, too, I used today's words in one of the droubles that I wrote for [livejournal.com profile] juno_magic's birthday. I thought about doing one of the old words, given this, but already had an idea for this one.

maelstrom \MAYL-struhm\, noun:
1. A large, powerful, or destructive whirlpool.
2. Something resembling a maelstrom; a violent, disordered, or turbulent state of affairs.

Examples
"The murk became thicker as Zachareesi fishtailed his canoe through a swirling maelstrom of currents pouring past, and over, unseen rocks."
-Farley Mowat, The Farfarers

"Suddenly, the Serb cause was thrust into the maelstrom of the Napoleonic Wars."
-Misha Glenny, The Balkans

"Always at the center of a maelstrom of activity and contention, he provided good columns for the press."
-Arthur Lennig, Stroheim

"Like Captain Ahab, the monomaniacal Harmon draws everyone around him into a maelstrom of trouble."
-John Motyka, review of The Dogs of Winter, by Kem Nunn, New York Times, March 23, 1997

Etymology
Maelstrom comes from obsolete Dutch maelstroom, from malen, "to grind, hence to whirl round," + stroom, "stream."

Waiting
Fëanaro paced the length of the room; his footfalls made an incessant, furious drumming; he wrung his hands and gnawed his lower lip. His eyes were as bright as the white-hot fire that had kindled the stars. He appeared as a maelstrom sizzling and deadly with lightning.

Nerdanel knew better than to interrupt her husband when he was like this, and so she sat in perfect placidity, mending one of her gowns.

Her hands, though—they quivered.

At last, the door opened, and Curufinwë emerged, a bright grin upon his handsome face. “Father! Mother!” he said. “You have a grandson!”

In other news, I am not getting all of the notification mails from LJ when someone leaves me a comment or replies to one of my comments. I have heard that this is because LiveJournal has moved locations and so has a new IP address that is being snagged by SPAM filters. Hubby is looking into what we can do to keep Comcast from eating our LJ emails. Anyway, I am doing my best to check my most recent posts for new comments, but if you leave me something and I don't reply, I am not being rude, I assure you. I have probably not received notification. As always, feel free to email me at DawnFelagund@comcast.net.

Oh I like it!! Thats great. I wish the silmarillion had told us more about Celebrimbor and Curufin. I love Cele...

And LJ is doing the same to me and everyone else I know. I get one out of every three notifications. I have to check everything I post. Its so annoying.

I got it!!

Actually I am doing the Celebrimbor/Curufin thing in my VV story. My OC is with Curufin and he's going to have a little breakdown and lash out at Cele for their history and his refusal to leave Norgothrond with him and Celegorm. Its going to be very sad cause up until then Curufin is trying to be a good father. But something happens to him that will bring back his history that he has been evading...but you won't know what unless you join the VV to read and/or write

Curufin

You know, I really have to start writing some highbrow stuff for a change. After I finish "Marring of Bliss" (which, let's face it, is hardly highbrow) then maybe I should write something nice like you mentioned. Something about his happier life. Yeah. And here I was thinking about writing another slashfic about Beleg/Gwindor and maybe Turin thrown in for the helluva it, although that man is soooo annoying.

I love the word maelstrom, I use it quite often. It is something I have sometimes when things overwhelm me and I can't get things straight anymore. This maelstrom feeling is exactly the way how to portray it. And it's Dutch from origin as well, don't we give you guys nice words?

I love this small drabble, so cute! It makes me a bit wonder how my parents (also mom and dad in law) will respond to this child on the way. Especially for my inlaws it will be their first :)

On the e-mails front: every notification e-mail arrives very slowly.. I have the same with GMX. They arrive.. but very slowly... turtle speed.

OMG I don't know how I freaking missed this! It has Curufin it it!!!! Squeeeeeeee!!!!!!!! It's wonderful, Dawn! I think this post got sandwiched in between some longer ones and I didn't see it. Not that I should be reading LJ's anyway, but I can't help it. I'm addicted to LJ post-and-comment reading.
