Very Random Thoughts from a Bad Little Elf
I am a bad little Elf because I should be writing and am not. I have eighteen minutes before I can leave from work, and it seems silly to drag my story out when I won't have any time to work on it. I have pledged a page a day, though. If I have fifty pages left to write, this means that I can finish in a month-and-a-half, at least, accounting for the five days that I will be on holiday. So, hopefully, after I have my Friday-afternoon-preparing-to-stay-up-mad-late-Friday-night nap, then I can pop the disk into the 'puter and write at least a page. More would be nice, but I'll settle for a page :)
I was thinking the other day that I need to outline the remaining sections for my story. Not chapters, mind you, but sections. Each section has two or three chapters and refers to a chunk of PoV from a particular character.
(So if you have thought that my chapter divisions seem rather random, you'd be right: They are, for the most part. But most of the "sections" are too large to post whole into HASA Members, for instance. Nor would anyone want to read chapters that long.)
As far as I can see it, the story will progress as follows:
-Maitimo (my current headache)
-Carnistir
-Macalaure
-conclusion (probably Maitimo again, given the plot, but who knows....)
See? That's not a lot! I can write that!
I should also probably throw another Feanor in there, but I cringe to think of it. I have taken his PoV once. The first time I tried, it really sucked, and I hit a wrong button and deleted the whole thing. Good thing too! The second time I tried, he duped me into believing something utterly stupid, and now I have to rewrite his section and part of the next.

Anyway, this, in turn, got me thinking about a Silmarillion movie. I joke to Bobby all the time that, were a Sil movie to be made, I would be first in line for tickets on opening night and gripe and complain about it ever after. I'd probably be like those LotR canatics that irk fans of the movie by being unable to look past it derivations from the book. Plus, they'd probably cop out and make Feanor evil, and that would just piss me off.
A few weeks ago, Bobby, our friend Harry Potter, and I were sitting on our balcony, talking about who would play our various friends and family members if a movie were ever made about us. I ended up being played by Nicole Kidman while Bobby ended up being played by Russell Crowe. (That's okay by me because Bobby finds Nicole Kidman attractive while I have no problem with Russell Crowe ;D) Harry Potter, was Daniel Radcliffe, of course. But my question to you, my dear LJ friends, is to ask who you envision playing the various Sil characters were--Eru help us--a movie ever to be made about it.
Hopefully, you'll do better than my "Orlando Bloom as Celegorm" bit!

Jennifer Ehle as Nerdanel. It's all about the red hair.
Emmy Rossum as Aredhel.
James Frain as Fëanor, because he plays dark like nobody's business.
Deborah Kara Unger as Indis.
Mandy Patinkin as Finwë, because he's so goshdarn cool. If he were twenty-five years younger, he'd be a shoo-in for Maglor, with his voice.
Molly Parker as Míriel, the beautiful, beloved, and tragic.
Tobey Maguire as Fingon. Because he's cool and has a not-quite-human face. Frankly, he'd have been my choice to play Legolas, because Orlando Bloom just didn't do it for me.
Joseph Fiennes as "dark Caranthir."
More later if I think of them. Problem with casting Maglor and Daeron is you need people who can actually sing, and most film actors aren't very good singers. Mandy Patinkin and Brent Spiner are two great exceptions, but they're a little old for the part.
Pics for the picks...
Deborah Kara Unger as Indis
Emmy Rossum as Aredhel
Joseph Fiennes as Caranthir
I can see these people very well as the respective characters you named!
Re: Pics for the picks...
1) Make it a mini-series, not a feature film. It's already very long and very episodic. A mini-series would give the producers plenty of breathing room to go into detail, and it could eventually become one of those classics like "I, Claudius," or "The Thorn Birds."
2) Hire István Szabó to direct it. The man is a genius at handling morally ambiguous characters, witness the films Taking Sides, which is about the investigation of Wilhelm Furtwängler, and Sunshine, which is one of my favorite movies ever. (much of my Sil cast comes from Sunshine)
Re: Pics for the picks...
Yes, I think this is a great idea! Sometimes I think, if it took them three films to do LotR, with its much smaller cast of characters and (pretty much) singular storyline, how many would it take to do Sil?
In all honesty, I don't think Sil will ever be a movie. I just like to think about it as though it was going to be and prepare my complaints ahead of time ;) Actually, though, the story is too complicated and the characters too many...although Hollywood is willing to try anything that'll make them a quick buck, it seems, and if you attach the LotR name to it and mention Galadriel and Elrond a few times.... ::shudder::
A mini-series, I think, has a much better chance of working.

Ooh - I'm having very bad images of Feanor channeling Finwe in that case, going up to Morgoth and saying, "My name is Curufinwe Feanaro; you killed my father; prepare to die."
And you don't have to find an actor who can sing. Just overdub the singing with someone else's voice. They did it for Minnie Driver in Phantom of the Opera.

Problem with that is, you get a character who suddenly sings in someone else's voice, and that's an effect that really skeeves me out. Especially if I know the singer. A guy I knew did Brendan Gleeson's singing voice in Cold Mountain, and it was kind of disconcerting to see Brendan Gleeson open his mouth and hear Tim Eriksen's voice coming out. It's the same problem I have with watching Star Trek dubbed into German.
But, hey, now I've got an idea for Maglor. Antonio Banderas. He sings well enough to handle the role of Che Guevara, which Mandy Patinkin originated. And Antonio Banderas doesn't chew nearly as much scenery as Mandy Patinkin did.

Why do I not know half of these people? Must pay better attention to credits....
I sense a long Google session ahead! :D

Half the cast comes from one of my most favorite movies ever, István Szabó's Sunshine. It was something of an arthouse flick, and I don't think it played much in smaller cities in the U.S.
