I am a bad little Elf because I should be writing and am not. I have eighteen minutes before I can leave from work, and it seems silly to drag my story out when I won't have any time to work on it. I have pledged a page a day, though. If I have fifty pages left to write, this means that I can finish in a month-and-a-half, at least, accounting for the five days that I will be on holiday. So, hopefully, after I have my Friday-afternoon-preparing-to-stay-up-mad-late-Friday-night nap, then I can pop the disk into the 'puter and write at least a page. More would be nice, but I'll settle for a page :)
I was thinking the other day that I need to outline the remaining sections for my story. Not chapters, mind you, but sections. Each section has two or three chapters and refers to a chunk of PoV from a particular character.
(So if you have thought that my chapter divisions seem rather random, you'd be right: They are, for the most part. But most of the "sections" are too large to post whole into HASA Members, for instance. Nor would anyone want to read chapters that long.)
As far as I can see it, the story will progress as follows:
-Maitimo (my current headache)
-Carnistir
-Macalaure
-conclusion (probably Maitimo again, given the plot, but who knows....)
See? That's not a lot! I can write that!
I should also probably throw another Feanor in there, but I cringe to think of it. I have taken his PoV once. The first time I tried, it really sucked, and I hit a wrong button and deleted the whole thing. Good thing too! The second time I tried, he duped me into believing something utterly stupid, and now I have to rewrite his section and part of the next.
![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
Anyway, this, in turn, got me thinking about a Silmarillion movie. I joke to Bobby all the time that, were a Sil movie to be made, I would be first in line for tickets on opening night and gripe and complain about it ever after. I'd probably be like those LotR canatics that irk fans of the movie by being unable to look past it derivations from the book. Plus, they'd probably cop out and make Feanor evil, and that would just piss me off.
A few weeks ago, Bobby, our friend Harry Potter, and I were sitting on our balcony, talking about who would play our various friends and family members if a movie were ever made about us. I ended up being played by Nicole Kidman while Bobby ended up being played by Russell Crowe. (That's okay by me because Bobby finds Nicole Kidman attractive while I have no problem with Russell Crowe ;D) Harry Potter, was Daniel Radcliffe, of course. But my question to you, my dear LJ friends, is to ask who you envision playing the various Sil characters were--Eru help us--a movie ever to be made about it.
Hopefully, you'll do better than my "Orlando Bloom as Celegorm" bit!

Date: 2005-08-12 07:09 pm (UTC)My inner Celegorm is screaming at the thought of Orli playing him. LOL.
(no subject)
Date: 2005-08-12 07:21 pm (UTC)Actually, thinking of it, I think there might be two...you know your story's too long when you can't even remember all the chapters! :) (I could probably post weekly for another three months before even reaching the point in the outline.)
I am very tempted to write another Celegorm section, as he is dear to me and always speaks frankly and easily, but this thing just won't *end,* and I am trying desperately to resolve and not start any conflicts.

Date: 2005-08-12 07:36 pm (UTC)Nerdanel
I used a very good pic of Cate Blanchett to make this icon, but Cate is already Galadriel, so that was shot from the start. I think of Nerdanel as Laura Fraser in young age (Nerdanel in adolescence here, and as a smith here), and Carrie-Ann Moss as she got older (older!Nerdanel happy, intense and serious, and considering). Well, really, I couldn't decide between the two, so I decided that I can live with having two versions of Nerdanel in my head.
Er... You can kinda tell who my favorite is.
a Feanorian
Perhaps it's just his expression, but I think that Joseph Fiennes in this picture looks very Feanorian. He could be a son of Feanor: I really don't see him as Feanor himself.
Maglor
This picture of Hans Matheinson seems to be very dreamy, which in turn is very Maglor-ish (well, in the pre-Oath, Valinorean days, perhaps).
Well, that's all the casting that I can come up with for now. Phew.
In regards to an actual movie version, I am torn between saying "Eru forbid" and "OMGSQUEE!"
In my heart, I know that they'd slaughter it. And when I say "slaughter", I mean "rip and tear the beautiful thing to shreds, toss them to the wind, and then try to assemble it into a coherant movie". By the end, they'd be saying that Feanor had been in cahoots with Melkor from the beginning, just to conform to society's black-and-white standards of "good" and "evil" (Hmph. Ever heard of complex characters instead of archetypal cutouts, Hollywood? Yeah... I didn't think so.)
Allie
PS- Is your friend's honest-to-god real name "Harry Potter"? Or is it an alias you use for him?
(no subject)
Date: 2005-08-12 09:22 pm (UTC)I like your early Nerdanels better than your later ones. And your Maglor....
You might have forever ruined my picture of Maglor!
In regards to an actual movie version, I am torn between saying "Eru forbid" and "OMGSQUEE!"
I selfishly want to keep my ideas of the characters and places untainted by Hollywood's opinion. I don't want to forever see Celegorm as Orlando Bloom! ::dodges arrows from Celegorm:: Nor do I want to forget how the story *really* goes....
And Hollywood Feanor would definitely be evil. There'd probably be a wife/child-beating scene, just to solidify that fact.
Is your friend's honest-to-god real name "Harry Potter"? Or is it an alias you use for him?
LOL, no his real name is Nick. He just looks like a grown-up version of Harry Potter.
It is not a good picture, but he is second from the right. (Oh, and the hot bride in red is me. Yes. I wore red to my wedding :D)
And he's so going to kill me for posting that.... :D
(no subject)
Date: 2005-08-12 10:21 pm (UTC)*le sigh* Is there no appreciation in this world for talent?
And I don't think I could ever find a Feanor, actor-wise. I only have artists' versions of him in my mind. Oh, but here's one: Feanor by Ivanneth, which I love (grrr, I had her website bookmarked, but I can't find it). And just for good measure, here's Ivanneth's young Nerdanel as well.
But I'm glad you like some of my picks (no pun intended)!
I want to alter the smith picture of
Laura FraserNerdanel, and make her hair red, but I'm not experienced enough in computer graphics to do that (plus, I don't have a photoshop-type program anymore: my trial of Paint Shop Pro 9 ran out at the start of the summer! *cries*).*giggles* His hair is black and kind of shaggy... Ha, you're right! He is kind of HPish. And you look so pretty! And a red dress! To your wedding! :D Huzzah for banishing convention!
(no subject)
Date: 2005-08-13 01:01 am (UTC)And that Ivanneth one of Feanor looks very like my icon which is so totally Feanor in my head.
My problems with the Silm movie:
1. I don't think they'd set out to make Feanor bad, but it would happen anyway. There is too much in the Silm to pay the kind of attention to his character that would be necessary for people to understand why he isn't bad.
2. The Silmarils in my head are way more impressive than anything they could come up with in real life.
3. The Feanor in my head is way more impressive than anything they could come up with in real life.
4. The LotR audience is going to be like "oh, that's Galadriel's Uncle. And Elrond's great great great uncle. And Galadriel's kid married Elrond." And people are going to begin to realize just how very inbred all the Noldor are. Ok, maybe not.
5. I'd have to go by myself. My hubby would NEVER go. He hate's watching LotR with me now because this is me during LotR:
Me: Shut up Galadriel. *turn to hubby* I hate her.
Hubbers: *sigh* Yes, I know.
Me: Do you know why I hate her?
Hubbers: because she gave her hair to Gimli and not what's-his-name.
Me: Feanor.
Hubbers: Whatever.
Me: I mean can you imagine? To a Dwarf! And she gave him THREE! She couldn't even give her own uncle ONE!
Me: Do you hear how Elrond says no oaths bind them? Do you know why he said that?
Hubbers: So Aragorn doesn't bang his daughter?
Me: *smaps him* NO Because he was raised by Maglor, who... *notices spaced look* Oh forget it...
Me: See the doors of Moria. *proud smile* Feanor's grandson made them.
Hubbers: *disinterested mmhmm*
Me: And he forged the three elven rings too. You know, the ones that Galadriel wears. Stupid Galadriel...who wouldn't give her hair to her uncle. That stupid Galadriel...
Hubbers: *silence*
Me: And you see that star thing..
Hubbers: You see, that's why I can't watch this with you.
(no subject)
Date: 2005-08-15 12:40 pm (UTC)Oh, my...that all sounds frighteningly familiar!
See the doors of Moria. *proud smile* Feanor's grandson made them.
Yes, that's me too, freaking out at the two second appearance of the Star of Feanor!
Only add:
Dawn and Bobby are watching the extended edition of FotR. It is around the part where Saruman is talking about a certain important ring that signifies the kingship of Men....
Dawn: Oh, crap, it's coming up....
Dawn is literally sitting on the edge of her seat. Bobby has known Dawn for ten years now and is used to this kind of behavior.
Dawn: Oh, it's almost here...are you ready?
Bobby: Yes, love....
Dawn: That's it! SQUEEEEEE!!! That's Felagund's ring! Wait! Wha--?! Ring of BARAHIR?! NO!!! THAT'S FELAGUND'S RING, YOU BASTARD!!!!
(Felagund doesn't get nearly enough credit, IMHO ;D)
And before I get skewered by any canatics, I am well aware that the *technical* name of the thing is "Ring of Barahir." But Felagund is *so* much cooler....

Yes, it is not a good picture, but in RL, he does strongly resemble HP, right down to the little round glasses ;D
And I always seem to be wearing red. I wore red to my Senior Prom; I own many red clothes. (I am not wearing red now but I am wearing zebra and that is obnoxious enough to count as close!) It seems I am naturally inclined to the Feanorians.... :D

People will probably laugh insanely at me for this, but I saw Hayden Christiansen (I think I spelled that wrong) as Anakin in the new Star Wars as a good Celegorm. (Even though his character reminded me of Feanor.) He has that seething angsty anger, just like Celegorm!
A very endearing bad guy....
::huggles Celegorm/Anakin::
Re: SILMARILLION MOVIE CAST
Date: 2005-08-12 10:12 pm (UTC)Ahem.
He could be Feanorian. And I totally see parallels in his and Feanor's life. Not only parallels, but similar personality traits that lead to their ulitimate fall and/or demise.
Going to review now - I swear!
(no subject)
Date: 2005-08-12 10:10 pm (UTC)I love Allie's picks for Nerdanel, with a copper wig of course. I could see those guys as sons too.
As far as dig's picks, I think Jason Isaacs would be awesome as Feanor, since I can't have him as Thranduil (the blond wig would make him look too much like Lucius Malfoy). He can be completely Assy, which is perfect for Feanor, plus he's effing hotttttt (I am so crushing on him) and he's a good enough actor to pull off the subtleties of Feanor's personality. Gawd but I love Jason Isaacs.
Ahem. Anyway. Jason & Jeremy London as Ambarussa. Hot damn! They are a little whiny to be Feanorians, but the director can beat that out of them...
I would never cast Viggo, or Beany, or Orli or Karl Urban in any other LotR-related movie (be it Hobbit or Silm based - unless Orli reprises Legolas in the Hobbit). I absolutely adore all four of those men. (And by adore I mean...well, you know what I mean.) But they have their place in Middle Earth, and it is not as a Feanorian.
As for my own picks, Jason Isaacs could be an acceptable Feanor. At first I thought if Viggo hadn't been Aragorn, but his voice is funny sometimes - like very nasally - listen at the Council of Elrond when he says, "you cannot wield it - none of us can" (or whatever). So no, Feanor can not have a funny voice ever.
Rob Lowe is totally hot enough to be Feanorian, but he's Rob Lowe, so he can't be.
How about Lea Thompson as Indis. I mean, what has she done lately? And she's still beautiful, but she has that smirky smug look about her like "ha ha - I nabbed someone else's husband - ha ha!"
And I love Hugh Jackman. But not as Feanor. Hmm...Fingolfin? Finarfin? Which one isn't blond?
Ooh - and I like Peter Wingfield - I have no idea who he is, but on Anne Mccaffrey's site, in the polls section, he is voted on for F'lar (if this means anything to anyone here) and I think he'd make a good Feanorian. Not the F-man himself though; his eyes are too dreamy...
OOOOH (yes, I'm scrolling down the polls page over there) - Colin Farrel would be an awesome Carnistir!!!!
Tom Welling would have been a decent Feanorian, but he's Superman, so no...
I would opt for no-names, personally, or people who aren't huge in Hollywood. Most of the LotR cast was not big when those movies were cast. And please don't anybody post a reply detailing what other things they have been in. I know. I've looked them ALL up. I am an OBSESSED FANGURL remember...
Ok...back to working on my

Date: 2005-08-12 10:26 pm (UTC)I can definitely see Colin Farrell as Caranthir, though....
Sometimes I get lazy and picture familiar people when reading books, but never the Sil. Which is why I was interested in how everyone else sees them :)
Did you see my later post about "Backstroke in the West?" Go read! It is hilarious!
(And then you may have an uninterrupted review :D)
THE SIL MOVIE CAST
Date: 2005-08-12 10:26 pm (UTC)I don't think Fingolfin is blond. The only hott blond one I can think of is Finrod Felagund. He's a blond hottie. Let's cast him well. Hugh Jackman could probably play Fingolfin - he can do the whole major hero thing very well - and he's a little older, too, which is good if he'll play opposite Jason Isaacs as Feanor.
I could go on forever about this, but I gotta go read all my e-mails now.

YES! YES! FINROD FELAGUND! I KNOW I AM SHOUTING! I LOVE FINROD FELAGUND!
(hence the name ;D)
I think Finarfin (who is blond) is also hot too. Sorry, I have a thing for Finarfin! :D
But Felagund is much hotter! ::huggles Felagund::

(no subject)
Date: 2005-08-12 10:42 pm (UTC)Jennifer Ehle as Nerdanel. It's all about the red hair.
Emmy Rossum as Aredhel.
James Frain as Fëanor, because he plays dark like nobody's business.
Deborah Kara Unger as Indis.
Mandy Patinkin as Finwë, because he's so goshdarn cool. If he were twenty-five years younger, he'd be a shoo-in for Maglor, with his voice.
Molly Parker as Míriel, the beautiful, beloved, and tragic.
Tobey Maguire as Fingon. Because he's cool and has a not-quite-human face. Frankly, he'd have been my choice to play Legolas, because Orlando Bloom just didn't do it for me.
Joseph Fiennes as "dark Caranthir."
More later if I think of them. Problem with casting Maglor and Daeron is you need people who can actually sing, and most film actors aren't very good singers. Mandy Patinkin and Brent Spiner are two great exceptions, but they're a little old for the part.
Pics for the picks...
Date: 2005-08-13 12:48 am (UTC)Deborah Kara Unger as Indis
Emmy Rossum as Aredhel
Joseph Fiennes as Caranthir
I can see these people very well as the respective characters you named!
Re: Pics for the picks...
Date: 2005-08-13 01:17 am (UTC)1) Make it a mini-series, not a feature film. It's already very long and very episodic. A mini-series would give the producers plenty of breathing room to go into detail, and it could eventually become one of those classics like "I, Claudius," or "The Thorn Birds."
2) Hire István Szabó to direct it. The man is a genius at handling morally ambiguous characters, witness the films Taking Sides, which is about the investigation of Wilhelm Furtwängler, and Sunshine, which is one of my favorite movies ever. (much of my Sil cast comes from Sunshine)
Re: Pics for the picks...
Date: 2005-08-15 12:46 pm (UTC)Yes, I think this is a great idea! Sometimes I think, if it took them three films to do LotR, with its much smaller cast of characters and (pretty much) singular storyline, how many would it take to do Sil?
In all honesty, I don't think Sil will ever be a movie. I just like to think about it as though it was going to be and prepare my complaints ahead of time ;) Actually, though, the story is too complicated and the characters too many...although Hollywood is willing to try anything that'll make them a quick buck, it seems, and if you attach the LotR name to it and mention Galadriel and Elrond a few times.... ::shudder::
A mini-series, I think, has a much better chance of working.
(no subject)
Date: 2005-08-13 01:13 am (UTC)Ooh - I'm having very bad images of Feanor channeling Finwe in that case, going up to Morgoth and saying, "My name is Curufinwe Feanaro; you killed my father; prepare to die."
And you don't have to find an actor who can sing. Just overdub the singing with someone else's voice. They did it for Minnie Driver in Phantom of the Opera.
(no subject)
Date: 2005-08-13 01:23 am (UTC)And you don't have to find an actor who can sing. Just overdub the singing with someone else's voice.
Problem with that is, you get a character who suddenly sings in someone else's voice, and that's an effect that really skeeves me out. Especially if I know the singer. A guy I knew did Brendan Gleeson's singing voice in Cold Mountain, and it was kind of disconcerting to see Brendan Gleeson open his mouth and hear Tim Eriksen's voice coming out. It's the same problem I have with watching Star Trek dubbed into German.
But, hey, now I've got an idea for Maglor. Antonio Banderas. He sings well enough to handle the role of Che Guevara, which Mandy Patinkin originated. And Antonio Banderas doesn't chew nearly as much scenery as Mandy Patinkin did.

Date: 2005-08-13 05:39 pm (UTC)Half the cast comes from one of my most favorite movies ever, István Szabó's Sunshine. It was something of an arthouse flick, and I don't think it played much in smaller cities in the U.S.
(no subject)
Date: 2005-08-13 01:27 am (UTC)Same here. Personally, I think it'd do better as a miniseries—more space to develop characters and to tell stories in full.
Orlando Bloom as Celegorm? I'm sorry, but no. I agree with the comments about keeping the LotR actors out of a Silm production unless they reprise their earlier roles. *ponders* (Keep in mind I'm not a movie person and am going more on looks than style/acting ability, and I consider myself to be under no obligation to pick people who speak English or are still alive. Some of my picks may be too old to be properly elfy-looking, too.)
Nerdanel: My gamemate who plays her uses Susan Sarandon for icons; maybe she would be an idea?
Indis: Ourania Basli, I think (she's a Greek stage actress). Sadly, Google turns up no pictures, and I don't have a scanner in this room. And then there's Maria Bonnevie.
Vána: Traci Lords in a bit part, of course. :) Or maybe Xuxa.
Thuringwethil: I can definitely see Fairuza Balk here, though it'd be an egregious bit of typecasting.
Rían: Outi Mäenpää, I think.
Andreth: I haven't been able to see her as anyone but Savina Yannatou since I started using her for Andreth's icons. Maybe Maitê Proença with dark hair or something?
Aredhel, or perhaps Anaire:Kerasia Samara (another Greek stage actress). Aredhel has always bothered me, as none of the women I've seen used for her icons in various RPGs have ever looked quite right.
Fingolfin: Is permanently Clive Owen in my head after an ex-gamemate used him for icons.
Lalwen: Fanny Ardant. Give the woman a wig, please, or at least tame her hair a bit.
Lúthien: Isabelle Adjani with gray contacts? *shrug* I don't know.
