I'm starting to really have fun with background characters. Ornisso was a lot of fun to write. I believe that he is quite thoroughly f***ed up, so one has to feel sorry for him even as he is cruel and deplorable at the same time.
I did feel sorry for Ornisso, on some level. Maybe he isn't cruel at all. That's just his unfortunate nature. Besides, if he and Erestor hadn't happened, Feanaro would have not known about the young Elf's inclinations and he would not have... Aaaand here I go again, with the Grand Conspiracy of Feanaro (TM) to get Erestor in his house, life, bed and to win his heart, as well. Can you tell I think my Noldo beyond genius?
Maybe you should take out the Tolkien out of OC centered stories and make them 100% original. Funny enough, while reading "Salt" (I had it printed at work and I was reading it at home, during a violent thunderstorm), I was constantly awed by all the impressive, original images, elements, reactions and emotions, to the point where I was sorry that you can't publish the story. True, taking out the Tolkien out of "Salt" would take the sense out of the story, but I still think that works such as this particular story of yours deserve much more attention than they get in the limited world of fandom.
