I saw the original Wicker Man on TMN (The Movie Network) on cable here years ago. Apparently the original film was lost for twenty years in the film company's archives and only discovered in the early nineties and released to wow reviews. Apparently there are two versions of it--one long one and a pared-down version that my movie guide says to avoid. Eventually I bought the original movie on DVD. It is one of the creepiest things I have ever seen. The main focus of the story is the pagan fertility rituals, which were fascinatingly brought out, complete with nudity. Of course, this film was R-rated. (Or NC-17 nowadays.) Underlying the fertility rites, however, were those of a more sinister kind--the ones that lead up to the police inspector's death.

This new Wicker Man sounds nothing like the old, and therefore I didn't want to see it. I hate when things like this are ruined.

My sister and I instead went to see The Illusionist, which I thoroughly recommend. It was beautifully-filmed, elegant and wonderfully acted by the terrific Edward Norton. Costumes were done by Ngila Dickson, a really talented costume designer.

If you have ever been interested in magic and how magicians achieve some of their 'tircks', you'll be interested in this movie. It plays with the occult a little bit, too. I found it extremely enjoyable and I don't want to give anything away, except to say that it was both a romance and a horror story with a surprise ending.
