There has been a lot of burning in movies lately, hasn't there? I suppose it's an idea that's been around forever. It's something that people are almost universally afraid of, but it's enough a part of history (and again universal) that writers/filmmakers can exploit it without coming off as being shamelessly gratuitous.
The only horror movies I can think of offhand with burning in them (other than those recently released) are Carrie and Nightmare on Elm Street.
