I think it gets forgotten that if his children didn't love him, then would never have sworn the oath!
Great minds think alike! :) This is exactly my thought on Feanor and his sons.
I actually started this story one day out of pure anger: I'd been poking around on fanfiction.net, reading Silmarillion stuff, and I encounted yet again an evil!Feanorian fic. (Well, actually it was a poem, but it had evil Feanorians nonetheless.) I was reading the reviews for this piece and I noticed that someone actually said, "Yes, I suppose Maedhros is the true villain in The Silmarillion."
Excuse me? Did I imagine someone more evil in the story...like Morgoth??
I was so angry that I started AMC as an answer to all the arguments that people make against the Feanorians in stories, to portray realistically how their early lives might have been, not to excuse them but to understand them. And an essential part of that was understanding why the sons so loyally followed the father. As you point out, I credit this to the fact that he must have given them reason. I refuse to take the "cop-out route" and write them as mindless automatons.
By the time I'll be done reading all the chapters that you have posted so far, I'll probably jump right in there and swear whatever oath I must to get more chapters from you.
Lol! I'm doing NaNoWriMo right now, but Arandil has talked me into two posting days starting in December, so I won't ask for any oaths. ;) I'm still thrilled that so many people want to follow this story. It's really more than I ever could have hoped for, when I started a "character study" one day to answer back to the anti-Feanorians.
If you like good Feanorian stories, Arandil has a work in progress worth checking out called "Spirit of Fire" that, so far, follows the early romance of Feanor and Nerdanel. Another excellent story is Blodeuedd's "Fire". Also, Allie Meril runs a community for Feanor worshippers fans called house_of_feanor.
