Re: Beren's vengeance ... I feel like lashing back at a foe in the heat of the moment is different from the calculation and extended planning needed to wage battle against the Feanorians of all people: not the most unseasoned or unsuccessful of The Silmarillion's leaders. I also think that the fact that Barahir's killers were Orcs makes a difference: kind of like how people would feel more okay with hunting down an animal that killed a person than they do about vigilante justice against an accused murderer. (I'm not saying that the view of Orcs as subhuman is right! Just that all the major characters--and I'd include Beren in that--probably saw them that way.)

I think the argument about Beren making an attempt on Curufin's life is far more likely. (But really! These discussions are hard for me, I must admit, because I'm falling back so much on speculation and my own personal views of the characters ... and not even characters I spend a lot of time thinking about.)
