Speaking of tearing up fingers, I wonder what his harp strings are made of. Metal strings will definitely do a number on one's fingers, but I wonder if gut strings might not be softer, both in tone and for the player.
This is a good point. I will have to look this up. I hadn't even thought of gut strings; my experience is with guitar and strings that are either steel or nylon. Both did a number on my fingers. ;)
Nelyo is rapidly acquiring skills at lying to himself, I think. I suppose that's how he'll be able to survive the crimes he'll commit later on in life.
I'd agree. He's certainly learning how to convince people "I'm okay"...even himself. But I think it's a survival tactic for him now. I've been there: It does no good to wallow in sadness. Sometimes, you have to yank yourself up, go to work, and say, "Dammit, I'm okay." And even those few hours of believing that are bliss.
Do all scholars recite before Manwë? You'd think that Manwë would have better things to do with his time than proctor exams, but hey.
In the Felak!verse, it is a tradition of the Noldor that those deemed most promising in their fields recite before Manwe. None of the other Elves do this and it is considered the highest honor among Noldorin scholars. (Nor is it essential to being a Noldorin scholar; it's rather like an Ivy League degree in that it results in a title that gets attention.)
I doubt Manwe spends much time on this, and he certainly has plenty of time anyway.
I wonder what a day in the life of Manwe is like. Does he spend a lot of time on issues pertaining to governance? Somehow, I've never thought so.
One can see that you're not entirely familiar with the routine and the mindset of professional music students, but you cover it up nicely with Macalaurë's flowery, romantic dreams about the music that he's playing. This shows up particularly during the concert with Vingarië. It's lovely writing, though it's very general.
Yep. I'm ignorant! The extent of my experience in musical performance is 1) band concerts and 2) the few (disastrous) occasions when I would "perform" for people on my guitar. "People" usually included family members who either had no means to escape or were too nice to try.
Really, the only performances I've ever had are as a skater, in both group performances and as a soloist.
Will we see more of the conservatory? I'd love to take a look at Macalaurë's voice lessons.
Yes. All of the Macalaure chapters are in for a serious overhaul, and I hope to write in lots of the suggestions you've given me.
