atanwende a picture of my favorite shoes, but all the rest should be here!
rhapsody11's precious little Kevin asked for my favorite cuddly toy. That would be Nelyo, my stuffed unicorn, though he highly resents being called a "cuddly toy," insisting that he is a living creature who--like any living creature--requires food, water, oxygen, love, and sunshine.
Nelyo was acquired at a Candy Kitchen during one of Bobby's and my winter excursions to Ocean City. We were buying candy for our families, and I saw a bin full of white unicorns, and picked one up to cuddle it. Next thing I know, the unicorn is on the counter with the candy. I argued weakly with Bobby but ended up walking out of the store with the unicorn.
For the next year, he lived on my desk. The next winter, I read The Silmarillion for the first time and finally named him "Maedhros," which has been changed to "Nelyo" over the years. I think he might be the first possession named after a Sil character.
These days, Nelyo lives in our living room. I do sleep with him on occasion, though my tendency to pull the blankets around my head tends to smash his ears, and he doesn't really like that. If he looks slightly gray...yes, that is dirt and evidence of how well-loved he is! And the dark bit around his neck...well, he's wearing one of my necklaces. He is a Feanorian!
Rhapsody asked to see my bookshelves. Well, I have three, so there's a lot of pictures! When we moved in, Bobby and I each brought a floor-to-ceiling bookshelf. Well, the books were two rows thick on some of the shelves, so we bought a third. The books are still two rows thick.
When we got the third bookshelf, Bobby, Potter, and I spent an afternoon organizing books, so they are (mostly) organized by subject now. I have photographed each shelf and will include a brief description beneath of what sorts of titles are on that shelf.
(And, yes, Rhapsody, I am going to look into that library index you mentioned! :^D)
The Bookshelf in the Study
This shelf is half computer games (the Rollercoaster Tycoons...all mine!) and some of Bobby's political science books. The model is an Oliphaunt that might or might not be completely modeled. I haven't worked on it in a year, so I don't remember! Next to that is Bobby's beer mug. The globe on the top is so old that it still has the USSR on it.
The next shelf is more of Bobby's political science books and Dawn's Tolkien books. The model is Feanor on Dragon, which is terribly unfinished. Some of my D&D books are also here, and the masses of papers--I suspect--are notes and such that I've made on the campaigns.
The next shelf is still more of Bobby's political science books. He is well-read in his field, as you can see. The C.S. Lewis books that Bobby bought for me are here as well. Sadly, I've only made it through one and a half. Some of my computer geekery books have been shoved here; they were likely on the desk and getting on Bobby's nerves. My animal rights books are just above that. The blue book rolled behind those is the US road atlas that we got from WalMart a few years ago for $15. I love maps, so I do on occasion take this down and actually "read" it. The big white tome to the right of that is my stats book, which I didn't even realize was missing from my shelf at work until doing this meme. Oops. Non-book stuff includes my artist's dummy (missing a foot) and the head to Bobby's Squire Stratocaster guitar.
The next shelf is more nerdy stuff. The green binders are my DM binders; between them are yet more D&D books (and some are at work). Next to that are gaming magazines (Bobby's) for Warhammer and some old game guides for Nintendo Entertainment System (mine). More of Bobby's political science books are to the far right. The doggie statue was a gift from my grandmother-in-law and reminds me of the dog Buffy we had when I was a child. The notecard is a list from last year of people I had to make Christmas candy for.
The bottom shelf is just junk: mostly gaming models that I am in the process of building and painting and might finish in the next forty years.

On top of the bookshelf in the living room are books that we can't fit anywhere else. Our diving textbook sets are up there. My Magical Creatures book is to the left. After that are some recent copies of National Geographic and review books that we got for boning up on our chemistry and biology before going back to school. The notebooks are Bobby's for school.

Reference books like our Bible, Merck Veterinary Manual, and Spanish dictionary are here alongside random books like The DaVinci Code and a Puerto Rico tour guide. The Suunto are the boxes for our dive computers. (They have a funny slogan: "Replacing Luck," like before Suunto came along, scuba divers just guessed how not to get the bends!) There are more of my computer geekery books. The JavaScript book was rescued from the paper recycling can at the apartment community. Throwing away books?! A travesty!
The next shelf is mostly nature and animals. My birthday cards are stacked on the shelf in front of Dog Stories. To the right, we start to get into some of my psychology books from my university days.
These are mostly tall books that do not fit on the shelves above, though this might be where they belong. Our biology and my psychology texts are here. Our old study guides from high school and college are here too. The magazines to the far right are back issues of The Hockey News and National Geographic--the latter of which were purchased at the library for ten cents a piece! The Gems and Crystals book belongs to Feanor.

The bookshelf in our bedroom is mostly fiction. These are the top two shelves. There's some pretty embarassing titles/authors here from when I was in middle school and thought cheesy = good! The political thrillers are all Bobby's.
More fiction. There is the occasional duplicated title since Bobby and I--before we lived together--would buy two copies of books so that we could each have one. For some of the Shakespeare, this was required for our classes. On the bottom shelf shown here, the white magazines to the right of the Harry Potter books are old copies of Bartleby magazine. I am published in the first white book and edited the fiction for the skinny black book and next white book.
Still more political science books belonging to Bobby as well as my "writing" books, sports, and social science books.

Niki (pulsarkat) asked for the inside of my refrigerator. Well, I went a bit beyond that since I find the outside of the refrigerator more impressive, since Bobby and I collect magnets from every place that we visit, and I display all of the postcards sent by family and friends. Also, in the house of an ice cream creator, the freezer is where the action's at, so I've posted pictures of that too! The pictures are captioned and pretty self-explanatory.

Alina asked to see my recently acquired Elven ears. I tried putting them on but they really require glue and makeup, so you'll only see them in the package until I break them out for the Renn Fest later this month. Again, captioned and so pretty self-explanatory.
Sharon asked for a picture of us suitable for printing and framing. Since she's my sister, this isn't too creepy. :^P I hope this works since I took the picture myself! (Bobby looks cute, but I look kind of weird.
Nienna asked to see my rollerskates! My skates have a long and sordid history that is partially represented in the captioned photo.
In short: I got them when I was twelve years old, so I have used them for almost thirteen years now. They were $125 when I got them, which was expensive at the time. The wheels alone were $10 a piece--also expensive at the time. It seems rather quaint now, but when I was twelve, having rollerskates that cost more than a Benjamin...that was seriously cool.
The toestops have been replaced once (last year) after the right one cracked down the middle. The bearings were replaced for the first time around the same time--a bearing broke, and it sounded like I had a tormented mouse in my wheel--so my skates have served me well.
Most importantly, my wheels have never touched an outside surface, so while they look nasty-dirty, consider that that's nearly thirteen years worth of minimum once-per-week use. Not bad, I don't think!

While being in Norway in July I saw collection to the other system, no idea which one. Figures were bigger and elven knight on a horse looked exactly like my Fingolfin!! I took pic with my cell phone, but it's too blurry. Anyway I hope I'll find it on-line, company's name should be on the picture. Some German stuff. I almost bought this knight ;)
Will come back here later, as to other photo memes on my flist! I'm way behind you folks!!

I can't find the pic I took with my dad's cell (I've got paladin from a different shop on mine ;) ). But it was blurry, too. And I remember that Fingolfin was more handsome then these on pictures ;)

I'm with you. I used "Elvish" for language and "Elven" when referring to the people, i.e. "The three Elven races of Valinor" or "The three Elvish dialects used in Valinor." But I see both used interchangeably, so it's never been a detail that bothers me. Just personal preference!

When I post the pictures for your request, I will take new macros of all of the finished models. When I took them the first time, I'd just gotten my camera and didn't know all of its quirks like a do now so the pics came out blurry. But we get along better now. *pets camera*

Date: 2006-10-12 01:07 am (UTC)Textbooks are such a rip-off. I refuse to sell mine back to the bookstore. At UMBC, they offer 10% of the original price, so for a $100 book, I get...ten bucks? Then they sell it for $80. No, that's okay.
So I kept most of my books for reference unless I had a friend who could use them. Then we agreed on a price that was less than the used-book price at the bookstore and more than what the bookstore would give me, so both parties ended up happy. I sold my chemistry text for $30; it would have cost my friend $90 used (and cost me $110 brand new!)

No kidding! Luckily I think I got around $60 for my bio book - still not cool, but better than 10%. Science books are the worst too, because they always have new editions so you can't buy them used. Grr. At one point, the bookstore offered me $1 for some book. I said, "Heck no!"
I borrowed both my chemistry book and my genetics book from a friend who had taken the class, but wasn't using the book that semester. Go me.

And nice to see I'm not alone in organizing my bookshelf(ves) by subject, and loving maps! We have this world and U.S. atlas in my house that I have to keep out of sight, or else I could get lost in it for hours. And everytime there's a map in a classroom, I must freak out some of my classmates who are between the map and me because I just stare over their heads until class starts! (Funny thing is, I can't follow a map to save my life...)

I'm surprised by how many meatless "meat" products exist. o_o I'll have to try some sometime--fewer bones and icky gobs of fat on my food (so I waste less of it) would be nice!
Vegetarian "meat" has come quite far in the 12 years I've been a vegetarian. It used to be hard to find and pretty gross when you did. Alas, there are four major companies competing in our local grocery stores, which makes them actually have to make it taste good. :^P A lot of it we've fed to meat-eating friends, and they've scarfed it down without realizing that it's vegetarian!
By far, my favorite is Quorn; they make a lot of "poultry" products and their chicken cutlets taste just like chicken. Morningstar Farms is very good as well, and Gardenburger and Boca round out the group. Our local stores have a pretty good variety too, though the place to go if you want the really exotic stuff is the organic market!
But if you ever want any recommendations, you know who to ask. Believe me, I've had it all. ;)
We have this world and U.S. atlas in my house that I have to keep out of sight, or else I could get lost in it for hours.
Oh, me too! I've recently discovered too that MapQuest labels railroad tracks, so when I'm running maps for our warrants, it's very easy to lose myself zipping around the map, trying to discover which tracks belong to whom and which I can follow where. But I love to learn how things connect, which roads go where. I love the names of places, especially when they're silly. (Accident, Maryland. Parole, Maryland, which sadly does not have a Parole and Probation office!)
(Funny thing is, I can't follow a map to save my life...)
I am the family navigator since Bobby could get lost in a shoebox. ;) So maps and MapQuest and my old instinctual sense o' direction get put to good use!

The fridge inside left me stunned... so much veggie food and sauces - wow! Ours (exept for the non-meaty food) actually looks rather similar... tons of bottles and boxes and whatnot with spices, sauces, etc. along these lines!
The elven ears... yours are way better than mine, I daresay. ;) Mine cover all the outer edge of the ear, which rather shows that they are fake, even with makeup. Yours, covering just the tip of the ear look much better! And of course we need pics of you wearing them! ;)
Suffice to say that you are very pretty, and Bobby (although not really my type) is kind of cute!
And as for the rollerskates... my mother had similar ones, but that was 35 years ago... it's so awesome to know that this kind still exists!

Most of them are schoolbooks from our university days. The others have been collected over the years as I dabble in various hobbies.

No, there's not! The only ones from Europe at all are from Newcastle, England, sent by my sister and sister-in-law (Sharon & Kirsty) who live there. :) So send away, if you wish!

Bobby is the chef in the household, and he is a firm believer in spices and sauces! We have a whole spice rack aside from that pictured here and cabinets full of stuff. For Christmas, I buy him exotic sauces to put in his stocking. :^P And always a bottle of hot sauce!

Awww, thanks! (From Bobby too!) He's a hockey player, and he looks like one, I think. Needless to say, I tend to find hockey players hott. ;) But that's part of the reason why I developed a crush on him in the first place!

They're really hard to find, but they do exist. Mine had to be special-ordered, even thirteen years ago. Freestyle rollerskating is kind of a niche sport these days. It doesn't help when they close our rinks.... *not bitter or anything about that* >:{
