Yes, I am writing this from my defunct-for-the-week-until-this-moment work computer. My Internet has been dysfunctional since late Monday morning, and to add insult to injury, my boss was out until Monday, so I would pass the day with absolutely no one to talk to. No Johnny. No Mr. Vern (my other boss). No (most importantly!) virtual friends. No one. Just my lonesome self, and one starts to feel pathological, talking to herself after a while.
It turns out it was a network problem. I have been going around with techies since yesterday morning to get it fixed...on the phone for hours...had so many people dial into my computer that I felt the poor thing had entered the world's oldest profession against its consent. It was so bad that a techie had to come to our office to fix it in person. (And then it turned out to be a minor network thing buried in the depths of Microsoft Windows NT.) If you ever meet a pretty, young African American woman named Rhonda Eaton, give her a hug for me.
Before folks write me off as unbelievably lazy, mine is the kind of job that mostly requires me to sit and wait for others to do things before I can, in turn, do something work-related. If no one is making arrests or picking up new warrants, then all I have to do is answer the phone and put away the day's files, and none of that takes more than a few minutes a day.
I have been staying up late at night to manage my Henneth Annun emails and my LiveJournal posts and, hence, unable to work on my story (much less post it), work on my beta, keep my RPG updated, or socialize with my poor husband longer than sitting with him at dinner, on top of being tired and cranky and just generally depressed from spending the day sitting at my desk and staring at the wall or drawing D&D maps and feeling like a general loser. Luckily, Bobby hasn't cared because he sits on the floor beside me at night, on his own laptop, playing with i-Tunes. (The man is a music maniac and a wonderfully devoted husband. If he would ever figure out how to use the Friends List on his LJ, he could read this!) But it will be a relief to return to my regularly scheduled program of painting, sculpting, sewing...in other words, injuring myself with various sharp implements in the name of craft, and take care of the other details at work.
Gratefully yours,
Medium Dawn Felagund of the Fountain

Date: 2005-07-15 12:25 am (UTC)I can probably do weekends with notice enough not to piss off my husband and my friends with my lack of attendance. My biggest problem is that I have too many commitments: gaming nights on Fridays, my RPG group meets every second or third Saturday, skating in the winter...::sigh:: Every time I quit an activity, I swear I'm not going to pick up another, but why was I given all this time to leave it empty? :)
And weeknights are always good, but I understand that people work and do all that normal stuff (that I do too).
