Squeaking in, just under the buzzer....
Well, not really. I still have two-and-a-half hours, EST, but tonight is Spooky Movie Night tonight for Bobby and I, where we watch the stupidest horror movies we can find. I think tonight's cinematic gem is called "Dead and Rotting," or something lovely like that.
And that starts five minutes ago, but I'm going to drabble first, as Bobby is currently attached to hislifeline 2K6 hockey game on Xbox. It's a DVD so, really, we can start whenever we like.
Okay. Stop rambling. Start drabbling.
The word:
jocund \JOCK-uhnd; JOH-kuhnd\, adjective:
Full of or expressing high-spirited merriment; light-hearted; mirthful.
Examples
"His careless manners and jocund repartees might well seem incompatible with anything serious."
-William Prescott, History of the Conquest of Mexico
"There was once a widow, fair, young, free, rich, and withal very pleasant and jocund, that fell in love with a certain round and well-set servant of a college."
-Miguel de Cervantes, Don Quixote (translated by Thomas Shelton)
"Many a glad good morrow and jocund laugh from the young folk
Made the bright air brighter."
-Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, "Evangeline"
Etymology
Jocund is from Old French jocond, from Latin jucundus, "pleasant, agreeable, delightful," from juvare, "to please, to delight."
As those of you who have read AMC know, in Felak!verse, Macalaurë meets his wife at a feast in the forest, where they play together as musicians. The chapter where they first meet is told from Maitimo's perspective, so we miss the moment when Macalaurë first sees her. Here is that moment.
First Love
The air in the clearing sparkled with music, made brighter by the wine, which splashed crimson into goblets that twinkled with Telperion’s light. But Macalaurë had a duty to perform, and the jocund festivities would not be his to enjoy tonight.
But as he approached the other musicians—resigned—the sound stepped aside for some new, cottony feeling he’d never had before, close to deafness, his vision aware of just one thing.
Or person.
She smiled and sat her flute aside. Her laughter tinkled where the music did not for him. “I am Vingarië,” she said.
You are my wife.
