Last night, I began working on my dessert project for the Super Bowl. I was a bit torn over what I wanted to do: my traditional cake decorated like a football field? An ice cream cake or pie with both team logos? Or a chocolate-caramel ice cream pie?
I ended up with the latter for the simple fact that I don't have icing supplies and didn't want to buy them, nor did I want to use commercial icing, which is expensive and hard to use. (Take it from one who used it all of the time at The Piece, being the only employee who knew how to decorate cakes.)
The pie has a chocolate graham cracker crust that is filled with chocolate ice cream. The drizzle across the top is caramel; it is bordered in whipped cream and caramel-filled football candies. Everything is homemade except for the whipped cream. I cheated there because I wanted the pretty floret shapes that are easy to achieve with canned whipped cream.
It came out looking pretty good:

And while looking at the pictures on the camera, I found this one of one Dawn Felagund acting like an idiot in the kitchen, in those heady days when holiday candy consumed my evenings.
Luckily, Bobby takes blurry pictures because I look very scary.

Date: 2006-02-06 02:26 pm (UTC)Thank you! As it turned out, the pie was quite delicious. As for the confectioner...she was cranky because the team she wanted didn't win. ;)

Date: 2006-02-05 09:29 pm (UTC)I think that, if you had me over there when the pie was ready, you would have hardly had the chance to take a picture. I would have been picking on those delicious footballs. I just luuuv chocolate and caramel. That's one yummy masterpiece. Compliments to the artist who does not look scary at all. In fact, you look cute and amused, even though those days were probably hella-busy.

Date: 2006-02-06 02:36 pm (UTC)I still maintain that I look rather scary...but maybe that's because I know that I was trying to look silly when Bobby snuck up on me with the camera. It amuses me to think that if Nelyo's takes off, that will be the first picture of me working on the business and will probably be somewhere in my store. Oh well...I'm not much of the serious type, as I'm sure you've figured out. ;)
And "hella-busy" pretty much describes that time! I still can't believe that I made all of that candy...and wrote all of those stories...and... *hides from next Christmas*

Date: 2006-02-06 02:45 pm (UTC)I am a clean freak in the kitchen, about myself and my space. Things are rather cluttered there because I don't have a lot of counter space and tend to multitask (go figure!), but I am rather obsessive-compulsive about my workspace.
I'm not sure why the wall looks pink, it's actually white! Maybe the camera flash made it look weird.

Date: 2006-02-06 02:54 pm (UTC)When Bobby and I eventually move into a bigger place, one of our requirements is a larger kitchen. Two of us cannot work in there together; in fact, I can barely work in there on my own.
This was my first gas stove. My parents live out in the boondocks where there are no public sewers/water/gas, so I grew up with electric. I like working with gas much better, though.

Picture no scary. I've seen worse. Much worse.

Though, the scary part would be that you photoshopped in your muses. ;P

Date: 2006-02-05 11:44 pm (UTC)Oh, and you look like a maniac in the kitchen! :D :D :D PH34R Dawn and her Choklit Attack!
I'm now going to suffer great fridge-envy over the enormous size of your fantastic fridge. *ogles*

Date: 2006-02-06 03:00 pm (UTC)I am a maniac in the kitchen (as I am most everywhere else) and tend to have the opinion that while waiting for something to heat or set, I should start another project. So I tend to have multiple projects going at the same time and usually finishing at the same time too.
Our fridge is nice...but it's depressing how quickly two people can fill it! Whenever I make ice cream, we have to reshuffle the freezer to make room.

(no subject)
Date: 2006-02-06 03:11 pm (UTC)The pie was delicious! But then, I am of the opinion that storemade chocolate ice cream can't begin to compare to homemade...not that I'd be biased or anything. ;) And I think that caramel and chocolate are meant to go together.

Date: 2006-02-06 04:20 pm (UTC)The best chocolate ice cream I've ever had was in Italy, one time in a small town in Tuscany, the other in Rome, somewhere near Piazza della Rotonda (it's rather funny, but I always remember quite well exactly where I can get good food, hehe). The one in my favourite ice-cream parlour is quite nice, too. And since I guess all of these were homemade, I have to agree with you. Definitely better than the stuff you get at the supermarket! Oh, and caramel and chocolate is definitely OTP. ;-)
