Pic Spam!

And now for something completely different ...

Pic Spam!!!

Following are the pictures we've taken over the past month or so. They're on all topics, organized under various LJ cuts. There's about fifty of them, so dial-up beware.

Before we really got underway with packing up the apartment, I took pictures of all the rooms, for sentimental value and also so that we could one day laugh at the egregious amount of clutter that we have. What follows is a truly frightening amount of mess. I did not clean up before taking these pictures. The apartment is much neater now ... because about 33% of it is packed into cardboard boxes. Whee!

And now, we move onto the baby birds.

Last year, we had a nest of house finches on our balcony, in our hanging flower basket. We got another pair this year; I don't know if it's the same pair or a different one, but they're house finches again. The babies left a few days ago; I tried to take pictures every few days to show their growth.

Yes, no pic spam would be complete without pictures of Alex. He's still growing and getting prettier by the day. All that puppy awkwardness is nearly gone, and he's getting feathers on his legs and tail.

I have still more (yikes!) of Alex baby pictures just developed and pictures from Swallow Falls State Park, but I'll save those for another day.
Today is my little sister's 23rd birthday so...

Happy birthday [livejournal.com profile] ssotknapsack!!!

I have on good authority that she was treated well for her first birthday in England. Certainly better than her first birthday, period, when she had to endure a jealous older sister calling her "Butter Tub" and telling her to shut up. ;)

In the Ellicott City Wildlife Report, it seems that there are four eggs total in our finches' nest...but the parents seem to have deserted the nest. I haven't seen them since we've returned. My mom had warned me that birds sometimes don't take care of their second set of eggs. This doesn't seem to make much sense to me. Why lay them if they're not going to take care of them? Aren't they supposed to multiply the species, blah blah blah?

But...there is a consolation. All around the back porch of my office are cocoons for these amazing white moths. The moths are everywhere. I'm afraid that I waste a good amount of time each morning and evening looking at them. I used to know what the moths were called, but I've since forgotten and haven't time to look it up, since we have to leave for Bobby's hockey game in about three minutes. I suppose that I am mercurial, yes, in my affections for our local wildlife. I prefer the moths to the birds. I can let the moths crawl on my hands, and they poop far less!
Well, it's official: My little sister Sharon and her girlfriend of two years have tied the knot. *pops the cork on some sparkling cider since Sharon's straight-edge and won't drink champagne* So now she's an old married lady like me with full rights to gripe if Kirsty consistently leaves the kitchen lights on or fails to turn her clothes out before putting them into the laundry.

They're in London on honeymoon and aren't here to see it, but here's some obnoxious marquee spam done in their honor!

Congratulations!

Sharon is probably regreting the day that she ever agreed to teach me basic HTML and therefore opened a can of worms for me to discover the marquee tag!

Baby Bird Update )

In better news, we are going to Game 4 of the Calder Cup minor-league hockey finals on Saturday! Woohoo! The Hershey Bears made it all the way to the end this year and are--according to Bobby--the favorites to win the whole sheebang. We've got a huge group going up, so it should be fun. (And it does not involve driving through northern Virginia with it's invisible roadwork, always a plus!)

Finally, gakked from [livejournal.com profile] callirhoe in accordance with the rules of the meme:

If you read this, if your eyes are passing over this right now, even if we don't speak often, please post a comment with a memory of you and me. It can be anything you want, either good or bad.

When you're finished, post these instructions on your blog and be surprised (or mortified) about what people remember about you.
About a month ago, I noticed that a pair of house finches were showing some interest in our hanging basket of snapdragons. I noticed a lot of fluttering in and out and knew what that meant.

So I pulled the basket down to toss out the bird's nest before it got too far underway or (worse) had eggs in it...and I was too late. There was the most precious, tiny little nest with five little eggs in it. Of course, I got all excited and squeeful and started checking it regularly and documenting my finds with pictures.

The baby birds are eleven days old today. Here are the pictures that I have of them so far.
