1 July

Today, Bobby and I went to see the Dublin Hodgepodge: those myriad things that we wanted to see and, often, had intended to see in passing to other things but had missed or simply run out of time for.

We started with the Book of Kells.

Today, we took a train to Kilkenny. We woke up ridiculously early to get the Luas to the train station to make a 7:30 train. Our B&B wasn't even serving breakfast yet, so we got some seriously overpriced juice and pastries at the train station, and I had my first-ever experience with a pay toilet when I needed--after the sticky pastry--to wash my hands. Perhaps because they're illegal at home, pay toilets just feel wrong.

The train ride was about two hours. I brought my postcards in hopes that I might get them all written on the journey. I got two or three done before falling asleep and staying asleep for the duration of the trip.

Administrative notes: As evidenced by my scanty posting and silence on comments so far, the Internet at our B&B is not good at all. During the day, I am lucky if I can remain on the Internet for a few minutes straight without losing the signal and having to reconnect. This, of course, makes uploading photos impossible except for late at night, when the Internet mysteriously works almost well. It must be a nightowl, like me. :)

Anyway, I'm doing my best to catch up with posts before leaving Ireland, but I will answer comments when I get home.

Secondly, I sent out postcards today, so if you asked me for one, it's now up to the Irish post office and your home country's post office to come through for us. I have my fingers crossed.

Now, back to our regularly scheduled journal entry. :)

Today was Marie's last day with us. :(

Because of this, we had planned to get an early start, since we had a rather ambitious agenda for the day: the Guinness Storehouse, the Dublinia Museum, St. Patrick's Cathedral, Christ Church Cathedral, and possibly St. Aidoen's church as well, if we could fit it in passing.

Today, we headed north of Dublin to one of the suburban seaside towns, Malahide. In my preparatory reading, I had learned that Malahide was once a small village that became one of the more popular Irish vacation destinations, a fact that would later be confirmed in a conversation on a train with two residents of Malahide, who both lamented the loss of their "sleepy little town." It rather reminded me of a much scaled-down version of our Ocean City in Maryland.

Today, we had schedules a tour of the Wicklow Mountains and of Glendalough. The Wicklow Mountains are just south of Dublin. We woke up, had breakfast downstairs, and went to meet the bus on O'Connell Street. We ended up in the wrong queue and were delighted to find that, instead of the sleek silver year-3000 tour bus, we were actually scheduled to go in the smaller red minibus. Our driver was great, introducing us to such gems such as calling Dublin's millenial monument--a tall silver spire that resembles a nice-looking cell-phone tower--the Stiffy by the Liffey rather than its proper name of the Spire of Light.

Our journey began early on Thursday morning with a car trip to Philadelphia, where we would depart by air for Newark, then on to Dublin. We arrived super-early to the airport and ended up getting put onto an earlier flight, which meant that we had seven hours in Newark before our departure for Ireland. Ick. But, at least, we were in place for the important leg of our journey. I think we walked five miles around Terminal C, trying to pass the time. (You know when you get on the people mover and just stand there to stretch time out that you're in a bad way!)
